Ecological House
Managua, Nicaragua
The design of this house focuses on green technology and the ecological considerations of the site. The house uses solar panels for electricity, “light tubes,” small flexible skylights that provide natural light to dark areas during the day, and solar shading devices on most openings to reduce solar heating load. The design also incorporates readily available renewable bamboo, as well as local materials such as volcanic rock and native wood species. The house has a linear design and sits at the edge of a ravine to take advantage of breezes and views. The solar technology, room cross ventilation and other measures such as passive ventilation of ceilings and the use of insulation keep the house cool in this tropical climate. The slope of the ravine is planted with coffee and tropical fruit trees.
