Horse Stables and Apartment
San Jose, Costa Rica
The stables for a polo aficionado in the suburbs of San Jose surround an open field and sit against a backdrop of polo grounds and lush vegetation. The entire complex contains sixteen stables, the owner’s apartment, storage structure and a caretaker’s residence. The entire complex surrounds a courtyard that contains the functional elements of horse training: a bathing circle, a drinking pond and a riding track. The building forms a “U” shape with the apartment and storage structures on the corners and stables and caretakers quarters on the three sides. The apartment sits on the second floor above the saddle room and commands views of the riding track and polo fields beyond. The figure of the spaces is clear and simple and the architectural language is modern.
