Tropical House

Managua, Nicaragua

The site for this house is located in the outskirts of Managua in a secluded and heavily wooded property. The house is organized around the main social space which is a modern interpretation of an “enramada,” an open thatched roofed hut. This enramada consists of light trusses of mahogany wood and stainless steel tensile cables supporting a zinc roof. The enramada is open on two sides letting breezes and nature flow through the space. A collection of pre-Columbian sculpture and pottery are strategically located to take advantage of views throughout the house. The forms of the dining room and library complete the other two sides of the main social space. There is a separate wing for the children, which jets out onto the landscape and has views of the pool and terrace areas.
